You may have members at your club who don’t want a handicap or to join the county. Remember it is the members’ club at your course that affiliates and NOT your business. The solution used by many clubs is to charge the golfer a membership or season ticket to your proprietary club/business. Then if he/she wants a handicap they join the members’ club.
Vivien Saunders – “When I bought the club at Abbotsley the owner operated as St. Neots Leisure Centre. Golfers paid him their golf fees. The members then had their own club known as Eynesbury Hardwicke Golf Club with their own secretary and treasurer. If a golfer wanted a handicap or to play in competitions he joined that club with a separate sub and they collected the affiliation fees. That’s how municipal courses have always operated.”
More and more golf owners are operating like this, particularly if they have a flexible membership scheme. The burden of collecting affiliation fees from all these people is too onerous.
Let the golfer pay his own fee.
